Penile Injection Therapy
2/13/2019
Recently there has been news coverage concerning the use of penile injection therapy to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Penile injection therapy has long been used to help men with ED achieve good erections and is a good option for men in whom oral medications like Viagra or Cialis do no work. This treatment is what the name says – the patient uses a very small needle and syringe to inject medication into the penis, and that medicine produces a hard erection that can last up to an hour. Urology Centers of Alabama (UCA) has a team of registered nurses, led by a physician, whose practice is focused entirely on men’s sexual health and prosthetic urology. UCA’s team not only treats erectile dysfunction, but we see patients for premature ejaculation, low testosterone, Peyronie’s Disease (curvature of the penis with an erection), and male urinary incontinence following radical prostatectomy. We want our patients to know that penile injection therapy is safe and can be very effective when done correctly and with proper oversight and instruction.
The three nurses in our Erectile Dysfunction Clinic are all licensed Registered Nurses. They each have a desire and passion for helping men/couples to experience the best and healthiest sexual relationships possible. When you are seen in the ED Clinic there is a UCA provider supervising your care. The fact that there is physician oversight of our ED Clinic is key. You would never expect medical treatment to be administered without a doctor’s approval, and ED treatments are no different. Our nurses do a great job of explaining the benefits and potential risks of penile injection therapy so our patients are well educated. When our patients are started on penile injection therapy to treat ED, we work with them to explain what treatments are covered by insurance and what their financial obligation will be. If our patients have questions or problems we handle them at our Homewood office if possible, but if our men have to go to an Emergency Room after regular clinic hours, UCA physicians are available. The treatment options we offer are standard-of-care. That means they are proven and accepted as effective and safe when done with proper physician and nurse involvement and patient instruction/education. Proper education is key. That is why we take the time to instruct our patients on how to administer the injections in detail. There are multiple options for treating ED, including penile injections.
Dr. Brian Christine, had dedicated his practice to men’s sexual health. He is the Director of Prosthetic Urology and Men’s Sexual Health and the Director of the UCA Fellowship in Men’s Sexual Health. There are many safe and effective options when dealing with ED. We treat each patient as an individual and prescribe treatment accordingly. You can always expect we will provide honest, expert care for sexual health needs. We are experts in sexual medicine, and we will do our best to help you and the one you love.
