November is Bladder Health Month
11/2/2020
Every November, the urology community celebrates Bladder Health Month! While we know most people are not as enthusiastic about bladder health as we are, it’s an important time to encourage more knowledge and awareness of common bladder health problems. The teams at UCA and the UCA Women’s Center are here to provide bladder health information, as well as a few helpful tips to maintain good bladder health.
Drink enough water – While this seems easy, many Americans do not take in the recommended daily water amount. It is suggested that adults drink 6 to 8 cups of water a day and limit caffeine and alcohol intake as well, as these may upset the bladder. Use a water bottle that includes ounce markers on the side to ensure you’re getting plenty of fluids.
Limit foods that upset the bladder – You may be well aware that some foods may affect your stomach differently than others, but may be surprised to learn that some foods can upset the bladder as well. Limiting the amount of chocolate (also a source of caffeine) and spicy or acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits can also help ease urinary incontinence.
Develop good bathroom habits – This may seem silly, but having good bathroom habits is key to good bladder health. Creating a bathroom schedule is a good start, and taking the time to make sure the bladder is completely empty can help prevent bladder infections as well.
Take care of your pelvic floor muscles – Maintaining a strong pelvic floor through pelvic floor muscle training. There are several benefits to Kegel exercises and pelvic floor therapy, which can be found here.
Be open with your doctor! – Being open and honest with your healthcare provider about your bladder health and symptoms you may be experiencing can be the first step in correcting any number of bladder issues. It’s normal to feel a little embarrassed about bladder problems, but the team at UCA and the UCA Women’s Center have the experience and professionalism to guide you through the challenges that come with restoring your bladder health.
